The Eagle

Eagles are large birds of prey with strong eyesight, hooked beaks, and powerful claws that hunt animals for food:

  • Size
Eagles are some of the largest birds in the world, with the smallest species being the Great Nicobar serpent eagle at 16 in and 1 lb. Female eagles are usually larger than males.

  • Flight
Eagles can fly up to 15,000 feet high. They have relatively long, broad wings and can fly quickly and directly.

  • Hunting
Eagles are too heavy to pursue prey in the air, so they try to surprise and overwhelm their prey on the ground. They are known to decapitate their kills.

  • Habitat
Eagles can be found in many different habitats around the world.

  • Species
There are more than 50 species of eagle, including sea eagles, booted eagles, forest eagles, and serpent eagles.

  • Symbolism
Eagles have been a symbol of strength, power, and freedom since ancient times. The bald eagle is the national symbol of the United States.
